Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park was established as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and became a national park in 1968. Lake Nakuru covers an area of about 62 square kilometres, while the entire park extends across 188 square kilometres.
Located just 2.5 hours from Nairobi, the park is one of Kenya’s most popular safari destinations. It is often included in safari itineraries and can easily be combined with visits to Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementeita.
Wildlife in the Park
The park is fully fenced and is home to one of the largest populations of white rhinos in East Africa. Visitors also have the chance to see lions, leopards, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, impalas, and several other antelope species.
Lake Nakuru National Park is also an important sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, making it one of the best places in Kenya to observe this rare species.
Famous Flamingos and Changing Conditions
For many years, Lake Nakuru was famous for its thousands of pink flamingos. Large flocks gathered along the shoreline, creating one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife spectacles.
In recent years, rising water levels have changed the landscape. Because the lake has no natural outlet, flooding has covered several park roads and submerged many of the yellow acacia trees. The higher water levels have also reduced the lake’s salinity. As a result, many flamingos have moved to other Rift Valley lakes in search of more suitable feeding conditions.
The ecology of Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru’s Unique Ecosystem
In 1990, Lake Nakuru was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance because of its exceptional ecological value. The lake’s food chain begins with a microscopic blue-green algae called Spirulina platensis. This algae is the primary food source for thousands of lesser flamingos.
Spirulina grows in spiral-shaped cells and thrives in Lake Nakuru’s alkaline water. It requires strong sunlight, warm temperatures, and high levels of carbon and phosphorus to grow rapidly.
Why Flamingos Are Pink
The alkaline water of Lake Nakuru creates ideal conditions for Spirulina algae. As flamingos feed on these algae, they obtain the natural pigments that give their feathers their distinctive pink colour.
The lake’s high soda content also leaves white mineral deposits along the shoreline. These deposits are a distinctive feature of Lake Nakuru and contribute to its unique appearance.
A Highly Productive Lake
Lake Nakuru is one of the most productive lake ecosystems in Africa. During peak growing seasons, Spirulina can produce an estimated 200,000 tonnes of biomass. This is many times greater than the biomass found in the surrounding savannah.
The lake’s exceptional productivity is supported by a continuous supply of dissolved minerals, particularly sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃). These nutrients make Lake Nakuru a hyper-eutrophic lake and support its rich birdlife and aquatic ecosystem.

The Food Chain of Lake Nakuru
On average, the flamingos at Lake Nakuru consume around 162 tonnes of Spirulina algae every day. This algae is also eaten by Tilapia grahami, the only fish species that naturally lives in the lake.
The fish are most common near the freshwater streams that flow into the lake. As a result, pelicans are often seen hunting in these areas. Other waterbirds, including herons, cormorants, and fish eagles, also depend on the lake’s fish population for food.
Together, an estimated 27,000 fish-eating birds consume about 5,000 fish each day. This makes Spirulina algae the foundation of the entire Lake Nakuru ecosystem. By feeding both flamingos and fish, the algae supports a wide variety of bird species.
Changing Water Levels
Lake Nakuru has experienced dramatic changes in its water level over the years. Since 1951, the lake has dried up several times and has also experienced periods of severe flooding.
The alkaline floodwater has damaged many of the park’s famous yellow-barked acacia trees. Unlike freshwater, alkaline water prevents the trees from absorbing the moisture they need to survive. As a result, many trees have died after prolonged flooding.
Climate and Evaporation
Between January and March, temperatures on the exposed mudflats can reach 50–60°C. These extreme conditions cause rapid evaporation, which increases the concentration of dissolved soda and other minerals in the lake.
Higher salinity changes the lake’s chemistry and affects the plants and animals that depend on this unique ecosystem. These natural fluctuations continue to shape one of Kenya’s most remarkable wildlife habitats.
The specialized flamingo
How Lesser Flamingos Feed
The lesser flamingo is specially adapted to feed on microscopic organisms, especially Spirulina platensis. While feeding, the bird lowers its head upside down and uses its upper beak to skim the surface of the water.
Inside the beak are fine structures called lamellae, which work like a natural filter. Similar to the baleen of a whale, these lamellae trap tiny algae while allowing water to flow back out. The upper and lower parts of the beak fit together perfectly, making this filtering process highly efficient.
A Remarkable Feeding Mechanism
The flamingo’s tongue is thick and muscular. It moves back and forth inside the lower beak like a piston. When the tongue pulls back, water is drawn into the beak. As it pushes forward, the lamellae trap the algae while the water is released.
This pumping action is repeated about 17 times per second, allowing the flamingo to feed continuously. It is one of the most efficient feeding adaptations found among waterbirds.
Flamingos and the Lake Ecosystem
Lake Nakuru is home to large populations of lesser flamingos. Together, they consume an estimated 180 tonnes of algae every day. This constant feeding helps maintain the balance of the lake’s unique ecosystem.
Unlike the lesser flamingo, the greater flamingo feeds on small aquatic animals rather than algae. Its diet includes insects, crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and other tiny invertebrates. The different feeding habits of the two flamingo species allow them to share the same habitat with very little competition.


Patterns of migration

Flamingo Migration
The migration patterns of flamingos remain one of Africa’s natural mysteries. Large flocks often travel between the alkaline lakes of the Great Rift Valley, usually during the night. Because of these movements, it is difficult to predict where the birds will be at any given time.
Flamingos move in search of the best feeding and breeding conditions. As water levels and food supplies change, they relocate to lakes that provide a more suitable habitat.
Breeding Habits
Although Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingos, the birds rarely breed there. Instead, they usually nest at Lake Bogoria or Lake Magadi in Kenya, where conditions are more favourable.
Flamingos build cone-shaped nests from mud to protect their eggs from flooding. A female typically lays one egg, and both parents take turns incubating it and caring for the chick after it hatches.

Wildlife at Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its rich wildlife and exceptional birdlife. Besides being an important feeding ground for both lesser and greater flamingos, the park is home to more than 450 bird species and 56 mammal species.
Visitors can see white and black rhinos, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, and many other animals. The park is also one of the best places in Kenya to spot the elusive leopard. In addition, it is one of the few places where visitors can see the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe in its natural habitat.
Waterbucks Around the Lake
The waterbuck is one of the park’s most recognisable antelope species. These animals are usually seen alone or in small groups near the lake or among the trees. As their name suggests, waterbucks stay close to permanent water sources, making Lake Nakuru an ideal habitat.


The African Buffalo
Another impressive resident of the park is the African buffalo. It is one of Africa’s largest and strongest wild bovines. Adult males can weigh up to 800 kilograms, while females may reach 750 kilograms.
Buffaloes are known for their strength and unpredictable behaviour. They can become aggressive if they feel threatened, so visitors should always observe them from a safe distance. Despite their calm appearance, they are considered one of Africa’s most dangerous wild animals and should always be treated with caution.
Rhinos in Kenya
Rhino populations have declined significantly across Africa over the past few decades. Habitat loss and illegal poaching have greatly reduced their numbers. Although rhinos once lived in many parts of Kenya, they are now much harder to find in the wild.
Even in the Masai Mara, sightings of the black rhinoceros are relatively rare. Conservation efforts continue to protect the remaining populations, but the species is still considered critically endangered.
Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the best places in Kenya to see both white and black rhinos. The park is enclosed by a protective fence, which helps reduce the threat of poaching and provides a safer environment for these endangered animals.
Black Rhino vs White Rhino
The black rhino has a pointed, prehensile upper lip that is specially adapted for feeding on leaves, shrubs, and small trees. This browsing behaviour allows it to hide easily among dense vegetation, making it difficult to spot during a safari.
The white rhino, by contrast, is a grazer. It has a broad, square-shaped mouth that is perfectly suited for feeding on grass. Despite its name, the white rhino is not actually white. The name is believed to have originated from the Dutch word “wijd,” meaning wide, which refers to its broad mouth.

Baboons
Baboons are African and Arabian Old World monkeys belonging to the genus Papio, part of the subfamily Cercopithecinae. There are five species of baboons and they are actually some of the largest non-hominoid members of the primate order; only the mandrill and the drill found in western and central Africa, are larger. Baboons are ground dwelling or terrestrial and are found in open savannah, open woodland and hills across Africa. Their diet is omnivorous, but mostly herbivorous; yet they eat insects and occasionally prey on fish, shellfish, hares, birds, vervet monkeys, and small antelopes if they can catch them. But baboons can be surprisingly fast. At the campsite in the Park they are often bold enough to run close by people and grab some food.
Even lions live in lake Nakuru National Park though they are relatively few and not so easy to spot. Except the above mentioned elephants, Lake Nakuru National Park – on top of being a world class birding paradise it has the whole range of big African wildlife and it is one of the best places in Kenya to spot the most beautiful but also most elusive predator in kenya – the leopard!
