Mountain Biking in the Western Cape

Various exciting mountain biking routes exist within the Western Cape Nature Reserves.

Tariffs for these mountain bike trails apply from 1 April 2003. All permits include the reserve entrance fee. Entrance is free for children younger than 6 years old.

Description: This circular route can be done as a 2-day trail or over 1 day only. It offers spectacular views of Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Sedgefield in the distance, hence the name “Bay to Bay View”. The route starts at the apple farm Vergenoeg and winds its way up to the crest of the Outeniqua mountains. A short detour to Spitskop Viewpoint (8km), situated 1453m above sea level, allows cyclists to experience the full extent of this spectacular view. The route then follows the crest until the road drops down into the Millwood basin to the campsite for the overnight stop. Follow the same route from the campsite back to the crest and then follow the exit signboards to take you back to the starting point. This route follows the same route as the 4×4 trail.

Region: Little Karoo
Nature Reserve: Millwood

Special Interests: The Millwood Nature Reserve is situated south-east of Nollshalte in the Outeniqua mountain range. The two main vegetation types found on the reserve are mountain fynbos and afromontane forest. Small populations of klipspringer, common duiker, grysbuck, bushpig and chachma baboons occur on the reserve. Leopards frequent the mountains but are seldom seen.

Trail Distance: Day 1: 13,9km (with extra 7km including Spitskop viewpoint
Day 2: 8km

Accommodation: Camping is allowed on the reserve at the demarcated campsite. Water and toilet facilities are available, but no showers. There is a covered picnic area with 2 picnic tables. Another option is the Kammanassie Nature Reserve self-catering cottage situated in Uniondale.

Description: This easy circular route is ideal for the whole family. It starts and ends at the parking area near the reserve office. It leads through plantations and fynbos areas, and will provide you with the feeling of travelling through a forest. Cyclists will also have to cross a small river. The trail looks out over picturesque views of the farms in the Villiersdorp/Vyeboom area.

Special Interests: Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is better known for its hiking opportunities, as it is home to the well-known Boland Hiking Trail. This short mountain bike trail, however, also allows visitors the opportunity to explore the area’s rich fynbos wealth.

Description: This moderate out-and-back route is 22km long and leads up to Groenlandberg, where cyclists will be treated to views over the sea and nearby farms. On a clear day you will be able to see to Hermanus and Kleinmond.

Description:The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy Cycle Trail is graded as moderate to difficult, but if 58km of switchback reserve and farmland track sounds excessive, there is softer options. It runs through parts of the reserve, as well as adjoining farmland, which form part of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy.

Groups are limited to 12, with a maximum of 24 bikes on the trail at any one time. Nearest Town: Heidelberg

Special Interests: Grootvadersbosch is known for its 250ha of indigenous forest, bird watching opportunities, fynbos mountains and forest walks. It is adjacent to the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area.

Trail Distance: 58 km

Accommodation: Visitors can stay over in the reserve in one of the self-catering cottages or pitch a tent in the campsite.
