Vulcanic eruptions on Iceland reveals the intricate effects of Globalisation
The erupting Eyjafjallajoekull vulcano on Iceland has put a stop to all air-traffic over Europe – the main market for Kenyan horticulture, which as the top foreign exchange earner, is a critical piece of the Kenyan national economy. It is estimated that the horticulture industry is losing $3 million a day and shedding jobs. If the farmers in Africa’s Great Rift Valley were ever in doubt that they are intricately tied into the global economy, they know now that they are. Also tourists in kenya cannot return to their home countries because of a volcanic eruption more than 5,000 miles away.
